Wilczek Land
Island Remote Arctic island in Franz Josef Land
Part of Russia’s high Arctic Franz Josef Land, Wilczek Land is an icebound island of polar plateau, cliffs and sea-ice channels. Expedition cruises visit for polar wildlife, iceberg scenery and history of early Arctic exploration.
Wilczek Land is a large, largely glaciated island within the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Russian high Arctic, under Arkhangelskaya oblast jurisdiction. It is one of the remote islands discovered and surveyed during the era of polar exploration in the late 19th century.
The island was named for Count Johann (János) Wilczek, a patron of polar exploration, and was explored during Austro-Hungarian and other European Arctic expeditions. It is uninhabited and composed mainly of ice-covered terrain, typical of islands in the central Franz Josef Land group.
Wilczek Land sits well north of the Arctic Circle in the Arctic Ocean and is surrounded by pack ice for much of the year, making it remote and accessible only by polar expedition vessels or aircraft during limited windows in summer.
- Name origin: Named after Count Johann (János) Wilczek, the principal patron of the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition of the 1870s.
- Glaciation and habitation: The island is almost entirely glaciated and uninhabited, typical of central Franz Josef Land landforms in the high Arctic.
