Wigry Lake sits inside Wigry National Park; sailors and kayakers use its sheltered bays, birdwatchers scope reedbeds, and the monastery on the peninsula draws cultural visitors.
Wigry Lake is a glacial lake in north-eastern Poland’s Podlaskie Voivodeship and forms the core of the protected area of Wigry National Park. It is known for a sinuous shoreline, numerous bays and a largely undeveloped lakeshore.
The lake is popular for canoeing, sailing, angling and quiet nature visits; shore paths and boat access points permit short and multi-day excursions. A historic monastery complex on the shore provides an additional cultural point of interest.
The lake lies in the Suwałki Lake District in Podlaskie and is surrounded by mixed woodland, peat bogs and small settlements; it is managed for conservation and low-impact recreation as part of the national park.
Wigry National Park was created to protect the lake, surrounding forests and wetlands, and to provide regulated public access to the area’s natural and cultural features.

How to Get to Wigry Lake #
Wigry Lake (Wigry National Park) is in Podlaskie Voivodeship near the villages of Wigry and Płaska, with the regional town Suwałki as the nearest rail/road hub. By car you can reach the park from Suwałki or Augustów via local roads; local bus services and taxis connect Suwałki/Augustów with villages around the lake in the tourist season. From the nearest village/parking areas it’s usually a short walk to lake shores and the monastery area (boat crossings may be used to reach some islets).
Tips for Visiting Wigry Lake #
- Visit early in the day or in shoulder seasons (late spring, early autumn) to enjoy quieter boat and kayak access and better birdwatching - summer afternoons are busiest with local and regional visitors.
- Make the monastery peninsula (Wigry Monastery/Camaldolese site) a priority: it's the historic and visual highlight on the lake and often less crowded than the main shorelines.
- Use local boat operators or marked rental points from nearby villages rather than attempting long crossings from unstaffed beaches; operators know the safest crossing points and where to park for the main trails and monastery access.
