Vištytis (lake) Lake

Vištytis is a lake in southwestern Lithuania adjacent to the town of the same name and lying on the international border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast. The lake and its shoreline form a local recreational area with fishing and boating.

Local amenities cluster in the town of Vištytis on the northern shore, and the lake is used seasonally for swimming, angling and small-boat recreation. Facilities are modest and the setting is rural rather than a large tourist resort.

Historically the lake and surrounding settlements have been influenced by shifting borders in the 20th century; the present-day shoreline and access reflect Lithuania’s post-Soviet national boundaries. Cross-border proximity is a notable geographic feature.

The lake sits in Lithuania’s southwest near the border with Kaliningrad Oblast and is the defining feature of the small town of Vištytis, with surrounding mixed woodland and agricultural land.

• Approach the lake from the Lithuanian town of Vištytis and use the marked trails in Vištytis Regional Park; several short lakeside paths and viewpoints are concentrated near the town rather than scattered along the border.
• Be mindful that the lake lies on the Lithuania-Russia (Kaliningrad) border - do not attempt to cross or get close to the opposite shore without the correct visas and permits; stay on Lithuanian-side viewpoints and trails.
