Whittington Castle

Whittington Castle is a medieval fortress near the village of Whittington in north Shropshire, England, with origins in the Norman and later medieval periods.

The site comprises a motte-and-bailey earthwork with later stone defensive works and domestic buildings; surviving elements show construction phases from the Middle Ages. The castle has undergone partial restorations and is managed as a heritage site with occasional public access for tours and events.

Historically it served as a regional stronghold on the Welsh Marches and changed hands in medieval conflicts, with architectural additions made over several centuries. Today it is presented as an archaeological and historic site illustrating frontier castle development.

The castle stands close to the village of Whittington, just north of Oswestry in north Shropshire, near the England-Wales border.
