White Mountains (California)

The White Mountains are a high mountain range in eastern California, east of the Sierra Nevada; they include White Mountain Peak, one of California’s highest summits at roughly 14,252 ft (4,342 m). The range is noted for its high-elevation environment and ancient bristlecone pine groves.

Hiking and mountaineering attract visitors to peaks and alpine ridges, while the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest offers short trails and interpretive signs to view very old trees in high, open stands. Roads provide access to high saddles from which popular summits can be approached on day hikes.

The range has been traversed and used for grazing and scientific study for more than a century; in the 20th century parts of the area were set aside for ecological research and conservation due to its unique high-elevation flora. Research stations and designated forest groves protect notable natural features such as the bristlecone pines.

The White Mountains run along the eastern edge of California’s Inyo and Mono regions, east of the Sierra Nevada and west of Nevada, with access points from U.S. Route 395 and nearby mountain passes.
