White Castle, Monmouthshire

White Castle (Castell Gwyn) is a ruined medieval fortress in Monmouthshire, Wales, originally established in the 12th century as part of the Norman frontier defences. It is notable for its concentric earthworks and substantial stone remains set on a raised site in the Welsh Marches.

Visitors can inspect broad outer earthworks, surviving lengths of curtain wall and masonry, and the footprint of inner defensive works; the site is compact and typically explored on foot in under an hour. Signage explains the castle layout and its relationship to the neighbouring Grosmont and Skenfrith castles on the same Three Castles circuit.

The original fortification was founded in the 12th century by Norman marcher lords as a border stronghold and was rebuilt and modified in stone during the medieval period. Over subsequent centuries it fell into disuse and became a ruin; it is now preserved as a historic site.

The castle stands in rural Monmouthshire, close to the small settlement that gives it its name and within the border landscape between Wales and England. It sits among farmland and lanes and is commonly visited together with the nearby Grosmont and Skenfrith castles.
