How to Get to Whitby, Ontario

Whitby is served by Toronto's main airports (Toronto Pearson YYZ and Billy Bishop YTZ) and by GO Transit rail on the Lakeshore East line (Whitby GO Station). Most visitors combine a flight into Toronto with GO Train or a taxi/rideshare for the final leg to Whitby.

By Air

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ): Pearson is the largest nearby airport and the most common arrival point for Whitby. From YYZ you can take the UP Express to Toronto Union Station (about 25 minutes, fare approx CA$12.35), then transfer to GO Transit Lakeshore East trains to Whitby GO Station (about 35-40 minutes). A direct taxi or rideshare from Pearson to central Whitby typically takes 45-60 minutes and costs roughly CA$100-150 depending on traffic; car rentals are also available at the airport.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ): Billy Bishop (the Island Airport) is handy if you arrive downtown. The pedestrian tunnel (or airport ferry) connects you to the mainland for free; from there it’s short to streetcar/subway services into Union Station (TTC fare, approx CA$3.35) and then the GO train east to Whitby (about 35-40 minutes). Direct taxis or rideshares from Billy Bishop to Whitby take around 40-55 minutes and typically cost in the CA$60-90 range.

By Train & Bus

Train: GO Transit Lakeshore East trains serve Whitby GO Station on the Union Station-Oshawa corridor. Trains from Toronto Union to Whitby take roughly 35-40 minutes; trains run frequently during peak hours and less often evenings/weekends. VIA Rail intercity services generally stop at Oshawa rather than Whitby; Oshawa GO/VIA station is the nearest VIA stop for intercity rail.

Bus: Durham Region Transit (DRT) operates local bus routes and connections centered on Whitby GO Terminal; DRT connects neighbourhoods across Whitby, Ajax and Oshawa. GO Bus services also operate between Durham Region and other parts of the GTA (useful for times when GO trains are less frequent). Local DRT fares are paid on board (see Durham Region Transit for current fares); GO bus/train fares depend on origin/destination and are charged via PRESTO or ticket.

How to Get Around Whitby, Ontario

Whitby is easiest to navigate by combining GO Train for trips to Toronto and Durham Region Transit or taxis for local connections. Driving gives the most flexibility outside the core; within downtown and along the waterfront walking and cycling work well.
