Whidbey Island is a populated island in Puget Sound in Washington State and is the largest island in the sound. It is known for its mix of coastal scenery, farmland and small towns.

The island offers a range of outdoor highlights from rocky and sandy beaches to seaside parks and hiking trails. Key outdoor spots include coastal bluffs and trails at Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, beach and picnic areas at state parks, and the scenic strait and viewpoints at Deception Pass State Park. Small towns such as Langley, Coupeville and Oak Harbor provide galleries, restaurants and local services.

European-American settlement and development occurred over the 19th and 20th centuries; parts of the island have been protected as parks and a national historical reserve to conserve agricultural landscapes and shoreline. The island also hosts a U.S. Navy air station at its northern end.

Geographically it sits in central Puget Sound, north of Seattle, with ferry and road links to the mainland and adjacent islands. The landscape combines tidal shores, farmland on rolling terrain and forested interior areas.

  • Access: Ferries and bridges provide vehicle access - a state ferry links Clinton (Whidbey) with Mukilteo on the mainland, and Deception Pass Bridge connects the island's north to Fidalgo Island.
  • Viewing points: Best viewpoints include the Deception Pass bridge area for tidal currents and Ebey's Landing bluff for west-facing coastal panoramas.
