Main image

Westpark is a large municipal park in the western part of Munich, Bavaria, created for the Internationale Gartenbauausstellung (IGA) and opened in 1983. The park covers roughly 40 hectares and is one of the city’s principal public green spaces.

The park is laid out with formal and themed garden areas, lawns and interconnected lakes and channels; notable sections include a Japanese-style garden, a rose garden and wide walking paths that run for several kilometres across the grounds. Outdoor performance facilities and open-air stages host events in summer, and the park’s water features provide focal points for walks and views.

Westpark was developed and planted for the International Garden Expo staged in Munich in 1983 and was retained afterwards as a public park. Since opening it has been used as a recreational and cultural venue for the city, with later additions and maintenance to its themed gardens and event spaces.

The park sits in the western part of Munich, approximately 4 km from the city centre, and is bordered by residential districts of the city with multiple access points and public-transport links.

  • Transport: Served directly by Munich U-Bahn line U6 at Westpark station, making the park easy to reach from the city centre.
  • Visit length: Covers roughly 40 hectares, so allow at least two hours to see the main gardens and lakes on foot.

What to See #

  • Garden areas: Large formal and themed garden areas laid out around ponds, lawns and paths, including a prominently visited Japanese garden and a rose garden; multiple entry points link to surrounding neighbourhoods and an open-air stage used for summer events.
  • Lakes and waterways: A central lake and connected water channels that structure much of the park and provide space for walking routes and views across the grounds.
