Western Sayan
Mountains Mountain range in southern Siberia
A Siberian mountain range, the Western Sayan offers glacier-carved valleys, alpine meadows and remote trekking routes for experienced hikers and those seeking extended backcountry camping.
The Western Sayan is a mountain range in southern Siberia that forms part of the larger Sayan mountain system. It stretches roughly east-west and separates river basins draining toward the Yenisei from those flowing southward into Mongolian and Central Asian basins.
The range comprises ridges, highland plateaus and river-cut valleys with vegetation zones that vary by elevation from forested slopes to alpine meadows. It is sparsely populated and crossed by mountain passes, with local use for grazing, forestry and seasonal travel.
The Western Sayan developed through tectonic uplift and long-term erosion and serves as an important geographic boundary in Siberia. The area contains important watershed sources for major Siberian rivers and supports diverse mountain ecosystems.
Geographically the range lies in south-central Siberia, spanning parts of Krasnoyarsk Krai, the Republic of Khakassia and the Tuva region, and forms part of the southern Russian highlands.
