Main image

The West Norwegian Fjords site comprises two of Norway’s best-known fjord systems, Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, located on the western Norwegian coast. The area is notable for its steep, glacier-carved valleys, sheer cliffs and numerous waterfalls.

Visitors encounter deep fjord waters flanked by towering cliffs, high waterfalls and scattered farm terraces clinging to the slopes; boat cruises and fjord viewpoints are major draws. The landscape is compact and dramatic, with accessible vantage points and short hikes to panoramic overlooks.

The fjords were carved by repeated glaciations during the Quaternary period; human settlement has adapted to the narrow valley floors and terraces, with historical farms and mountain roads present in parts of the landscape.

The fjords lie on Norway’s western coast, in fjord regions of western Norway; the site spans steep coastal valleys opening to the North Atlantic.

  • Viewing points: Several roadside viewpoints and mountain roads offer panoramic views down into the fjords, making short scenic stops practical for visitors arriving by car or boat.

Because the site is remote and desert roads can be challenging, organized tours or 4x4 transport are recommended.
