About Wernigerode Castle#
Wernigerode Castle (Schloss Wernigerode) is a historic hilltop castle overlooking the town of Wernigerode in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The site combines medieval origins with substantial 19th-century historicist reconstruction.
The castle complex includes fortified walls, towers and interior rooms open as museum spaces, with exhibitions of period furnishings and local history. Terraced walkways and battlements offer views across the town of Wernigerode and into the surrounding Harz landscape.
The castle originated in the Middle Ages as a regional stronghold and residence; it underwent large-scale rebuilding in the 19th century in a historicist/neo-Gothic manner to create the present appearance. Over time it transitioned from a noble residence to a public museum and tourist site.
Sitting above the old town of Wernigerode, the castle occupies a hillside position in the Harz Mountains of Saxony-Anhalt, roughly within the central Harz tourist area.
- Views: Perched on a hill above the town, the castle provides panoramic views over Wernigerode and the Harz mountains, making the battlements a popular viewing point.
What to See#
- Castle museum: Castle museum areas including period rooms and exhibition spaces open to the public, set within the castle’s historic walls and towers.
How to Get to Wernigerode Castle#
Wernigerode is accessible by regional trains from Hanover and Magdeburg; the Harz narrow-gauge railway (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) connects to local tourism routes. The castle is a short walk uphill from the historic town center and the train station.
Tips for Visiting Wernigerode Castle#
- Walk the town before ascending to the castle - the half-timbered streets of Wernigerode are photogenic and less crowded in the morning.
- Take the Harz narrow-gauge steam train (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen) to Wernigerode for a scenic route and a period-authentic arrival.
- If touring rooms, check which wings are open - some historic rooms close seasonally or for restoration.
