Weisshorn
Mountain Prominent Swiss Alpine peak with sharp pyramidal summit
The Weisshorn in Valais is a classic 4,000-metre peak of the Pennine Alps; climbers and experienced alpinists attempt its ridges for technical ascents and high-alpine views.
The Weisshorn is a 4,506-metre peak in the Pennine Alps in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is noted for its steep, pyramidal profile and is prominent in the skyline between the Mattertal and the Val d’Anniviers.
The mountain attracts experienced mountaineers for its long ridges and mixed rock-and-ice routes. The summit provides expansive views across surrounding four-thousanders including the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa on clear days.
The first recorded ascent was made in 1861 by John Tyndall and party. Since then the mountain has remained principally a mountaineering objective rather than a ski or tourist summit.
The Weisshorn sits between the valleys leading to the villages of Zinal and Randa in Valais, with approach routes starting from valley trailheads and mountain huts in both valleys.
- Climbing note: The peak is a classical high-Alpine climb and serious technical routes require solid glacier and rock-climbing experience.
What to See #
- Summit (4,506 m): The summit reaches an elevation of 4,506 metres and is the defining high point of the massif, offering long alpine ridges and panoramic views across the Pennine Alps.
- Approach valleys: Two principal approach valleys are Val d'Anniviers to the west and the Mattertal to the east, which provide access routes and base villages for climbs.
How to Get to Weisshorn #
Approaches to the Weisshorn are usually made from Zermatt (south) or from the Turtmann valley (east). Zermatt is reached by train from Visp; from Zermatt, mountaineers travel to trailheads via mountain lifts and footpaths. Climbs require alpine experience or the hiring of a certified mountain guide.
Tips for Visiting Weisshorn #
- Approach from Zermatt or Randa and give extra time for the final alpine approach - the Weisshorn's classic ridges are serious climbs.
- If not climbing, take in the mountain from the Gornergrat or from the Turtmann valley to appreciate its pyramidal profile.
- Hire a certified mountain guide for any ascent: the normal routes are long, exposed and require alpine experience.
Best Time to Visit Weisshorn #
Alpinists usually attempt the Weisshorn in mid-summer when weather and objective snow conditions are most favorable; non-climbers should visit surrounding viewpoints year-round for dramatic profiles.
