How to Get to Weertman Island #
These Antarctic islands are not served by public transport. Weertman Island is reachable only as part of organised Antarctic expeditions: access is by ice‑strengthened expedition ship (or by helicopter arranged by an operator) from Antarctic gateway ports. The common gateway for Peninsula voyages is Ushuaia (Argentina); departures may also operate from Punta Arenas (Chile).
Tips for Visiting Weertman Island #
- Access is only possible via Antarctic expedition vessels in the austral summer (November-March); coordinate with an IAATO‑approved operator for permitted landings and safe zodiac transfers.
- Plan to be flexible: landings can be changed or canceled for weather and sea‑ice conditions, and early morning or late afternoon visits often give the best light and wildlife activity.
- Listen closely to briefings and follow the guides' instructions on approach distances and routes-shorelines on little‑visited islands are often fragile and protected, and landing protocols are strictly enforced.
