Waterton Lakes National Park
National Park Canadian Rocky park with lakes and international peace park
In southwest Alberta, Waterton Lakes National Park combines glacier-carved lakes, steep peaks and the small Waterton townsite. Visitors hike trails, boat on Upper Waterton Lake and watch for bears and bighorn sheep; it’s linked by road to Glacier National Park, Montana.
Waterton Lakes National Park is a compact mountain park in southwestern Alberta that sits on the Canada-United States border and adjoins Glacier National Park in Montana, forming the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. The park was established in the 19th century and preserves lakes, mountain valleys and alpine terrain.
The park’s main attractions are the lakes and surrounding peaks, accessible trail systems, and a prominent lakeside historic hotel that overlooks the central lake. Wildlife viewing, hiking on marked trails and scenic drives are the primary visitor activities, and boat excursions operate on the main lake in season.
The area was set aside for protection in 1895 and later linked with Glacier National Park across the border in a formal international park agreement. Over time the park’s visitor infrastructure and conservation zones have been developed to balance recreation and habitat protection.
Waterton Lakes National Park sits in the southwest corner of Alberta at the edge of the Rocky Mountains, adjacent to the Montana border and several hours’ drive southwest of Calgary.
- Best time to visit: Park trailheads are busiest from July to September when most high-elevation trails are snow-free and services are fully open. Lodge and campground bookings are recommended in peak summer.
What to See #
