Waterberg Plateau
Mountain Table mountain plateau with unique endemic wildlife
Rising in central Namibia, Waterberg Plateau National Park combines sandstone cliffs, endemic wildlife and guided trails; travelers come for game viewing, birdwatching and dramatic plateau panoramas.
Waterberg Plateau is a prominent sandstone massif in central Namibia’s Otjozondjupa Region, notable for its steep escarpments and table-top summit and for being a focal feature of conservation in the area.
The plateau presents cliffs that rise roughly 200 metres above the surrounding plains and supports remnant woodlands and savanna species; the protected area on the plateau contains walking trails and viewpoints used for short hikes and wildlife viewing. The natural defensibility and cliffs are a defining physical characteristic visitors notice on approach.
In historical terms the plateau was a focal point during the early 20th century conflicts in Namibia and later became the focus of formal conservation efforts to protect the plateau environment and its wildlife. The nearby managed park area preserves both the geology and the local fauna.
Geographically the plateau sits in central Namibia east of Otjiwarongo within Otjozondjupa Region, forming a conspicuous mesa in the otherwise flat surrounding landscape.
- Plateau height: Cliffs rise roughly 200 metres above the surrounding plains, creating a distinct escarpment and mesa-like profile.
- Historic site: Location of the 1904 Battle of Waterberg during conflicts between colonial forces and the Herero people.
What to See #
- Waterberg Plateau Park: Protects the sandstone plateau and its ridges, with marked trails and viewpoints over the surrounding savanna; the park is the main managed area for conservation on the plateau.

The park is near the town of Otjiwarongo (approximately 60-70 km); from there, a sealed road leads to the park entrance and an unsealed road ascends to the plateau. Most visitors drive from Windhoek (approx. 300 km) or join guided tours.
