Vat Phou
Temple Ancient Khmer temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage
Vat Phou is a Khmer temple complex in Champasak province, a UNESCO site visited for stone shrine ruins, riverside terraces and inscriptions that predate Angkorian temples.
Vat Phou is an Angkorian-era temple complex and archaeological site in Champasak province in southern Laos, with sacred structures and carved stonework dating from the 5th century and major Angkorian construction in the 11th to 13th centuries. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 for its well-preserved Khmer temple architecture and ritual landscape.
The complex is arranged along an axial, processional layout that links the lower terrace and river plain with the upper sanctuary on the flank of Mount Phou Khao; carved lintels, pediments, and sandstone blocks show classical Khmer motifs and temple planning. The site combines earlier pre-Angkorian elements with later Angkor-period additions and served both religious and territorial functions.
Vat Phou originated as a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva and was integrated into the Khmer imperial system during the Angkorian period; it remained an important local religious centre and was adapted over centuries. Archaeological work and conservation have focused on the temple buildings, terraces, and inscriptions.
The complex sits on the southern edge of the Mekong River plain at the base of Mount Phou Khao in Champasak province, southern Laos, and is approached from the nearby town of Champasak and the Mekong riverbanks.
