Wasit
Archaeological Site Ancient Mesopotamian city and medieval irrigation center
Wasit contains remains of an early Islamic city founded in the 8th century and archaeological mounds; scholars visit the ruins, and the surrounding province offers river landscapes along the Tigris.
Wasit is the site of a medieval city and archaeological ruins in eastern Iraq’s Wasit Governorate, originally established as a strategic administrative and military center in the early 8th century. Its name literally means “middle” and it played a regional role during early Islamic rule.
On site are remains of city walls, foundations and mosque structures visible as earthworks and masonry; the location is principally of interest to specialists and visitors wanting to see early Islamic urban layout rather than developed tourism attractions. There are no extensive museum displays at the ruin itself.
The city was founded by the Umayyad governor al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf in the early 700s as a garrison and administrative town, later declining after shifts in river courses and political centers across the medieval period. Archaeological investigation has documented the planned layout and defensive works.
The ruins lie on the Tigris floodplain in Wasit Governorate, eastern Iraq, in the general area administered from the provincial capital Al-Kut; the landscape is a low-lying river plain.
- Visitor facilities: The surviving remains are archaeological and can be fragmentary; visitor facilities are minimal so expect basic access and limited signage.
