Wartburg

Wartburg is a hilltop castle near Eisenach in Thuringia, founded in the 11th century and notable for its medieval architecture and its association with Martin Luther and German cultural history.

Visitors come to see the Luther Room where Martin Luther stayed in 1521-22 and worked on a German translation of the New Testament, the Singer’s Hall with medieval decorative elements, Romanesque chapel spaces and museum displays explaining the castle’s fabric. The castle offers views over the surrounding forested valleys and interpretive exhibits on its medieval role.

Originally established around the mid 11th century by the Thuringian nobility, the castle served as a regional power centre and was rebuilt and extended in later medieval centuries. Wartburg’s association with Martin Luther and 19th century German cultural movements increased its historic significance; it is protected and conserved as a major heritage site.

The castle crowns a wooded ridge above the town of Eisenach in western Thuringia, overlooking mixed forest and agricultural land.
