Schloss Friedenstein is an early Baroque ducal palace in Gotha, Thuringia, built for Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha in the mid-17th century (construction begun 1643). It is one of the largest early Baroque palace complexes in Germany and served as the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Gotha.

The complex includes grand state rooms, gallery spaces showing ducal art collections, and the historic Ekhof Theatre, noted for its surviving 17th-century stage machinery. Exhibition rooms display paintings, decorative arts and ducal memorabilia across several wings of the palace.

Erected on ducal initiative from 1643 to the 1650s, the palace functioned as the administrative and residential centre of the Gotha court. Over the centuries the complex was adapted for museums, archives and cultural use while retaining many historic interiors.

The castle sits on a central hill above the town of Gotha in Thuringia, in central Germany, roughly west of the regional city of Erfurt and embedded in an urban setting with nearby parks and streets.

Gotha is about 15 km west of Erfurt. By train: Regional services from Erfurt or Eisenach to Gotha station, then a 10-15 minute walk to Schlossplatz. By car: A4 motorway to Gotha exit and follow local signs to Schlossplatz.
