Wanping Fortress

Wanping Fortress is a small 17th-century walled fortification on the outskirts of Beijing that served as a military garrison and local defensive post. It is notable today for its preserved gate towers and its connection to 20th-century events near the Marco Polo Bridge.

Constructed in the late Ming period as a garrison town to guard approaches to the capital, the fortress retained military and administrative functions into the modern era. The area gained international attention in 1937 during the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, after which it figured in early hostilities of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Wanping sits to the southwest of central Beijing near the Lugou (Marco Polo) Bridge, within the city’s outer districts and readily accessible from urban Beijing by road and public transport.
