Wando (island)

Wando is the principal island of Wando County in South Jeolla Province, off South Korea’s southwest coast, and serves as the county’s administrative and commercial centre. It functions as a local maritime hub with a long association with fishing and seaweed cultivation.

Coastal scenery, seafood markets and viewpoints around the town are the main attractions; an observation tower provides panoramic views over the harbour and neighbouring islets. The island’s economy and visitor interest focus on seafood and seaweed production rather than large-scale tourism.

Wando’s modern role developed around fishing, aquaculture and local trade; the island also stages an annual seaweed-related festival that celebrates the local harvest and products. Over time facilities for visitors have expanded but the island retains a working-port character.
