Walnut Canyon National Monument
Park National monument protecting ancient cliff dwellings and canyons
Walnut Canyon National Monument near Flagstaff preserves Sinagua cliff dwellings set into steep canyon walls, with short rim and island trails and interpretive overlooks explaining ancestral Puebloan life and masonry.
Walnut Canyon National Monument preserves a sandstone canyon near Flagstaff, Arizona, that contains well-preserved cliff-face dwellings built by the Sinagua people. The monument protects masonry rooms and associated artifacts set into alcoves along the canyon’s inner walls.
A developed Island Trail descends into the canyon and runs along the cliff face past several excavated room blocks, while the Rim Trail follows the canyon edge and provides a series of overlooks and interpretive displays. Trails include stairs and narrow sections; the Island Trail gives closer views of the masonry and living spaces.
The cliff dwellings were occupied by Sinagua residents in the pre-Columbian period, roughly in the 12th and 13th centuries CE, and archaeological work has documented building techniques, artifacts and environmental use. Park management focuses on preserving the fragile masonry and the canyon environment while allowing controlled visitor access.
