Wallingford Castle
Castle Ruined medieval castle and historic riverside fortress
Wallingford’s castle mound and surviving earthworks recall a Norman stronghold; visitors explore the riverside town, Thames Path walks and local museums that trace medieval river trade and military history.
Wallingford Castle is a medieval castle site in the town of Wallingford, England, on the River Thames. The castle was established soon after the Norman Conquest and became one of the most important royal fortresses in medieval England.
Today the main visible features are large earthworks, the motte (castle mound) and fragments of the former bailey and foundations; the site is set within riverside gardens that offer public access and views. Visitors typically walk the ramparts and gardens and view the remaining masonry at low level rather than encountering substantial standing buildings.
The castle was founded in the years following the Norman Conquest and played an active role in medieval and later conflicts, including sieges during the civil wars of the 12th century and use as a royal stronghold. After the English Civil War the castle was slighted and largely demolished, leaving the earthworks and foundations visible today.
The ruins lie on the northern bank of the River Thames in the town of Wallingford, Oxfordshire, approximately 16 km (10 miles) south of Oxford and adjacent to the town centre and riverside. The motte and riverside gardens form the main public spaces at the site.
- State of the ruins: Much of the original stonework was demolished or removed after the English Civil War; surviving features are primarily earthworks and lower foundations rather than intact buildings.
- Public access and viewpoints: The site provides good views over the River Thames and the historic core of Wallingford; the motte and riverside gardens are accessible to the public year-round.
What to See #
- Motte (castle mound): The motte - a large earthen mound - is the most conspicuous surviving feature and can be climbed to view the surrounding course of the Thames and the town.
- Castle Gardens and earthworks: Castle Gardens occupy the riverside area around the ruins with paths and lawns that provide public access and views across the remains of the bailey and earthworks.
