Wallenstein Palace
Palace Baroque Prague palace housing the Czech Senate
Wallenstein Palace in Prague houses the Czech Senate and a baroque garden with sculptures; visitors stroll the gated garden and view early-17th-century architecture in Malá Strana.
Wallenstein Palace is an early Baroque palace complex in Prague’s Malá Strana built for the Imperial general Albrecht von Wallenstein in the 1620s. The complex comprises the main palace buildings, a large formal garden and service wings constructed during 1623-1630.
Prominent features include the Wallenstein Garden with pond, grotto and allegorical statues, and the palace’s grand halls and riding school that were part of the original ensemble. The complex is large compared with neighbouring aristocratic residences of the same period and displays Italian-influenced Baroque planning.
Wallenstein (Albrecht von Wallenstein) commissioned the palace after his rise in the Thirty Years’ War; construction began in the early 1620s and the ensemble was completed through that decade. Over the centuries the complex changed hands and functions and in the 20th century was adapted to official and public uses.
The palace stands in the Malá Strana district directly below Prague Castle, a short walk across the Lesser Town from Charles Bridge and Prague’s historic centre.
- Origins: Built for the military commander Albrecht von Wallenstein in the early 17th century and notable as one of Prague's first large-scale Baroque palaces.

- Palace complex and chambers: The palace main complex includes a grand riding school and suites built for Albrecht von Wallenstein in the 1620s; historic halls today house administrative and ceremonial rooms used by the Czech Senate.
How to Get to Wallenstein Palace #
Wallenstein Palace (Valdštejnský palác) is in Prague’s Malá Strana. The nearest metro is Malostranská (Line A); from there it’s about a 5-10 minute walk to the palace and gardens. Several trams (including lines 12, 20 and 22) stop at Malostranské náměstí, also a short walk away-taxis or a brief walk across Malá Strana from Charles Bridge are common alternatives.
Tips for Visiting Wallenstein Palace #
- Aim for weekday mornings to enjoy the Wallenstein Gardens before Prague's major tour groups arrive - the gardens are typically much quieter than Prague Castle but fill up later in the day.
- Enter through the garden access rather than expecting a full palace tour: much of the palace complex houses the Czech Senate and public access is focused on the Baroque gardens, which are the most rewarding public area.
- Check the Czech Senate's schedule before you go - parts of the complex and some paths in the gardens can be closed for official events, so confirmation avoids disappointment.
