Walled Obelisk
Monument Byzantine-era obelisk at Istanbul's historic Hippodrome
On Istanbul’s former Hippodrome, the Walled Obelisk stands near the Serpent Column and Blue Mosque; tourists pass it while exploring Byzantine and Ottoman monuments in Sultanahmet.
The Walled Obelisk (also known as the Masonry Obelisk) is a medieval/Byzantine-era stone monument standing on the site of the former Hippodrome of Constantinople in present-day Istanbul. It is a solid masonry obelisk composed of stacked stone blocks rather than a single monolith.
The monument was originally faced with gilded bronze plaques that decorated its surface; many of these metal elements were removed during the Fourth Crusade in 1204, leaving the plain masonry core visible today. The obelisk now stands among other monuments on the Sultanahmet square and is a noted surviving element of the ancient Hippodrome complex.
The obelisk dates to the Byzantine period and reflects the layering of Roman and later Byzantine urban monuments in Constantinople. It occupies a central location on the historical square that once hosted chariot races and imperial ceremonies.
Located in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul, the obelisk sits near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia on the old Hippodrome site in the historic peninsula of the city.
How to Get to Walled Obelisk #
The Walled Obelisk stands on the old Hippodrome (Sultanahmet Square) in Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district. Take the T1 tram to the Sultanahmet stop (or Gülhane) and it’s a 2-5 minute walk across the square to the obelisk, alongside the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Many city buses also serve the Sultanahmet area; if driving, follow signs to Sultanahmet / Laleli and expect only short walking distances within the pedestrianised square.
Tips for Visiting Walled Obelisk #
- Go early morning or later in the evening to avoid the heavy tour-group traffic around the Hippodrome; the obelisk sits in an open plaza that fills quickly during peak hours.
- Approach on foot from the Sultanahmet tram stop so you pass other Hippodrome monuments (Serpent Column, German Fountain) and can see the Walled Obelisk in its archaeological context rather than as an isolated stone column.
- Don't miss the details in the masonry and later repairs on the obelisk - they're easier to study up close when the plaza is quiet and many visitors are focused on the nearby mosques.
Best Time to Visit Walled Obelisk #
Visit in spring or early autumn for mild weather and smaller crowds around the Hippodrome and the Walled Obelisk.
