Waimea Canyon State Park
Park Deep canyon on Kauai, dramatic red and green cliffs
On Kauai, Waimea Canyon State Park features red basalt cliffs, waterfalls and lookout roads; visitors hike trails, photograph vistas and drive to viewpoints in Kokee State Park.
Waimea Canyon State Park is a large scenic canyon and public park on the western side of Kauai, Hawaii, known locally as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The canyon is a deep, eroded valley cut into volcanic rock and is a major scenic attraction on the island.
The canyon developed through erosion of uplifted volcanic rock and ongoing incision by streams, primarily the Waimea River; its present form is the result of volcanic activity followed by long-term erosion rather than human construction. The area was set aside for public use and recreation as part of Hawaii’s system of parks and protected areas.
The park occupies a large portion of western Kauai, inland from the small town of Waimea and reachable by road from the main population areas; the island’s principal airport and larger service centres are on the opposite side of the island, so expect a drive of roughly an hour or more from the main transport hubs.
- Best light and viewpoints: The canyon is often best photographed in morning or late afternoon light when the layered red and green contrast is strongest, and many lookouts have parking and short paved viewpoints.
- Practicalities: Combine a visit with nearby Kokee State Park for longer hikes and higher ridge viewpoints; services are limited inside the park so bring water and fuel up before driving in.
What to See #
- Waimea Canyon Lookout: A series of roadside lookouts and viewing areas along Waimea Canyon Drive provide panoramic views of the canyon walls, red soil layers, and waterfalls; the main Waimea Canyon Lookout is the most visited viewpoint and has an established parking area and viewing platform.
- Kokee State Park: Kokee State Park lies adjacent to the canyon to the north and contains multiple trailheads that connect into the canyon landscape, offering longer hikes and access to ridge-top viewpoints.
- Key trails: Canyon Trail to Waipo'o Falls is a popular hiking route that descends from ridge viewpoints into the canyon to a waterfall viewpoint; trail lengths vary from short lookout walks to multi-kilometre hikes.
How to Get to Waimea Canyon State Park #
