Waigeo is a large island in the Raja Ampat archipelago off the northwest tip of New Guinea in Indonesia, known as one of the principal islands of Raja Ampat. It is a focal point for marine biodiversity and birdlife in the region.

The island is valued for its marine habitats and terrestrial wildlife; nearby reefs and waters support diverse coral and fish species, while lowland forests host endemic birds including the Wilson’s bird-of-paradise. Snorkelling and diving bases operate from local villages and the regency capital.

Waigeo has long been inhabited by indigenous Papuan communities and today forms part of Raja Ampat Regency within Indonesia’s Papua region. The modern administrative centre and main transport hub is the town of Waisai, located on the island.

Geographically it sits off the Bird’s Head Peninsula of New Guinea in Indonesia’s West Papua/Southwest Papua region, surrounded by numerous smaller islands and rich coral seas. Travel to Waigeo is typically via boat or ferry from Sorong and regional charter flights to local airstrips.

  • Main access: The town of **Waisai** on Waigeo is the administrative centre of Raja Ampat Regency and is the main ferry and boat entry point for the island.
  • Wildlife highlights: Home to endemic birds such as the Wilson's bird-of-paradise and adjacent coral reefs that form part of the Raja Ampat marine region, noted for very high marine biodiversity.

How to Get to Waigeo #

Waigeo is reached via Sorong (the regional hub on the Bird’s Head Peninsula). Fly into Domine Eduard Osok Airport (Sorong) then transfer to Sorong harbor and take a public ferry or scheduled speedboat to Waisai on Waigeo (the main port/town on the island). Boat crossings are the only regular connection; from Waisai the main sights and guesthouses are within a short walk or short local boat ride.

Tips for Visiting Waigeo #

  • Plan to arrive in Sorong early and take the public ferry or speedboat to Waisai (the main port on Waigeo) in the morning-sea conditions are calmer then and connections are more reliable than afternoon services.
  • Use Waisai as your logistical base rather than trying to reach remote bays direct from Sorong; most resorts and dive operators are based there and can arrange local boat trips to Kabui Bay and nearby reefs.
  • Many visitors stick to the popular dive/snorkel sites; allocate time for village visits on Waigeo to see local Papuan culture and lowland mangrove habitats, which are easy to arrange through local homestays or guides.
