Waddesdon Manor

Waddesdon Manor is a late 19th-century country house in Buckinghamshire, England, built for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild between 1874 and 1889. It was created as a weekend residence and to display the owner’s art collections.

The principal attraction is the house with its historic interiors and collections of European decorative arts, furniture and porcelains assembled by the Rothschild family. The terraced parterre garden and surrounding parkland, an aviary and a sculpture trail are major on-site features that together form a visitor route around the estate.

A programme of temporary exhibitions, family activities and seasonal events runs throughout the year, and the formal terraces offer photographed views across the nearby Vale of Aylesbury. Visitor facilities include a café and shop housed in adapted service buildings.

Commissioned and built by Ferdinand de Rothschild in the late Victorian era, the manor was intended as a showcase for the family’s collections and a model of French Renaissance architecture in England. The house was given to the National Trust in 1957 and is managed by a Rothschild charitable trust with conservation and public display as its purposes.
