Main image

Waco Mammoth National Monument is a paleontological site and park in Waco, Texas, preserving an in-situ concentration of Columbian mammoth remains interpreted as a nursery herd. The fossils were uncovered during construction in 1978 and the location has since been developed for research and public interpretation.

Visitors can see an enclosed excavation shelter that protects articulated and partially exposed fossils, along with a visitor centre that houses exhibits explaining the paleontology and depositional context. The site presents interpretive displays about Ice Age fauna and the methods used by paleontologists to excavate and conserve specimens.

Local landowners and scientific teams oversaw early discoveries and salvage excavations after 1978; subsequent research clarified the site’s significance as a multi-individual accumulation of Columbian mammoths. The site’s national monument designation in 2015 formalised federal protection and expanded visitor services and research support.

The monument is located within the city of Waco in central Texas, adjacent to developed urban neighbourhoods and accessible from the city’s main roads and visitor infrastructure.

  • In-situ mammoth site: The site protects an in-situ 'nursery herd' fossil site of Columbian mammoths first exposed during construction in 1978 and offers a sheltered dig area visitors can view.
  • National monument status: Designated a U.S. national monument in 2015, the site combines active paleontological research with public displays and educational programming.
