W National Park of Niger
National Park Transboundary park preserving Sahelian biodiversity and migrations
Part of a transboundary W-shaped river park, W National Park preserves savanna and riverine habitats; safaris and boat trips attract wildlife watchers hoping to see elephants, hippos and West African antelope species.
W National Park in Niger is the Nigerien portion of the broader W-Arly-Pendjari transboundary conservation complex, named for the W-shaped meanders of the Niger River that cross the protected area. The park protects savanna and riverine habitats that support large mammals of the West African fauna.
The park comprises riverine forests, floodplains and dry savanna where visitors may see elephants, buffalo, antelope and other savanna species, particularly near water in the dry season. Much of the park’s interest is wildlife observation and scenic river corridors rather than built visitor infrastructure.
The protected area was established to conserve the important biodiversity of the Niger River meanders and surrounding savanna and is managed in cooperation with regional conservation partners. The park forms part of an internationally recognised network of protected areas across national borders.
The Niger sector of W National Park lies in the Tillabéri Region in southwestern Niger, along the international borders with Burkina Faso and Benin, centred on the Niger River meanders that give the park its name.
- Best season: Wildlife viewing is best in the dry season when animals concentrate near permanent water sources; organized safaris and local guides improve chances of sightings.
