W National Park

W National Park is a large protected area in West Africa named for the W-shaped meander of the Niger River; it is part of a transboundary conservation complex that spans Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso. The park protects a mix of savanna, woodland and riverine environments that sustain large mammals and rich birdlife.

Habitats are structured around the Niger River and its seasonal floodplains, creating important grazing and breeding areas for elephants, hippos, buffalo and antelopes, as well as numerous bird species. The park functions as a regional conservation and migration corridor and is managed in coordination with neighbouring countries to maintain ecological connectivity.

Within Benin the park lies in the northeastern Alibori region and is accessed via conservation outposts and park gates; seasonal variation in water levels strongly influences wildlife distribution and visitor access.

• Transboundary conservation: The protected area is transboundary, extending into Niger and Burkina Faso as part of the larger W-Arly-Pendjari complex important for regional biodiversity and migration corridors.
• Best time to visit: Dry-season concentration of wildlife along river channels makes the period from November to March the most reliable time for sightings and boat or vehicle safaris.
