Vyšehrad
Monument Historic Prague fortress with cemetery and city views
Prague’s Vyšehrad offers fortified walls, the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul, a national cemetery and riverside parkland with views over the Vltava.
Vyšehrad is a historic fortified hill and complex on the Vltava River in Prague, known for its medieval origins, prominent churches, and a cemetery containing many notable Czech figures.
The hilltop complex includes a large Neo-Gothic basilica, remnants of medieval fortifications and bastions, and the early medieval Rotunda of St. Martin. Visitors commonly walk the elevated defensive walls and terraces that provide panoramic views of the Vltava and central Prague; the park-like grounds contain monuments, walking paths, and viewpoints that stretch along the ridge.
The site has origins in the early medieval period and appears in Czech legends; it was fortified and refortified across centuries, with important Romanesque and later Baroque and Neo-Gothic additions. Fortification work in the 17th and 18th centuries shaped the visible bastions and casemates still seen today.
Vyšehrad sits on a promontory on the right bank of the Vltava, a short distance south of Prague’s historic center - within easy walking or short tram ride from the Old Town and Prague Castle areas.
- Best time to visit: Sunset and early evening provide wide views over the Vltava and Prague city center, with fewer crowds than Prague Castle.
- Getting there: Flat, pedestrian-friendly grounds and short steep stair sections make the site accessible on foot from Prague's center in around 20-30 minutes or by tram to nearby stops.
What to See #
- Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul: A 19th-century neo-Gothic basilica that dominates the hilltop and contains richly painted interior decoration and twin towers visible from across the Vltava.
- Vyšehrad Cemetery: A historic cemetery where many Czech cultural figures are buried, situated beside the basilica and containing numerous sculpted monuments.
- Rotunda of St. Martin: An early medieval rotunda, known as the Rotunda of St. Martin, dating to around the 11th or 12th century and one of the oldest surviving structures on the site.
How to Get to Vyšehrad #
Vyšehrad is easily reached by Prague Metro line C (station Vyšehrad). It’s a 5-10 minute walk from the station to the main entrance; tram lines also serve nearby stops along the Vltava.
Tips for Visiting Vyšehrad #
