Vyborg Castle

Vyborg Castle is a medieval stone fortress located on a small island in Vyborg harbour, in present-day Leningrad Oblast, Russia. Its original construction dates to 1293 and it served as a strategic outpost on routes across the eastern Baltic and Gulf of Finland.

The castle complex is dominated by a tall central tower and surrounding defensive walls; over centuries it was enlarged and altered under Swedish, Russian and Finnish control. Today the site contains museum spaces and restored parts of the medieval keep that are open to visitors.

Founded by Swedish authorities during the late 13th century, the fortress played a prominent role in regional conflicts and trade between the Baltic powers and later became integrated into Russian territorial holdings.

The castle sits at the entrance to Vyborg harbour on the Karelian Isthmus, about 130 kilometres northwest of Saint Petersburg and adjacent to the modern town of Vyborg.
