Vulkan Alaid
Volcano Remote stratovolcano forming the Kuril Islands' highest peak
A remote volcanic cone in the Kuril/Sea of Okhotsk region, Alaid draws mountaineers and volcanologists for its near-perfect cone, explosive history and hard-to-reach northern island approaches.
Vulkan Alaid is a dominant stratovolcano on Atlasov Island in the northern Kuril Islands, within Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. Its near-perfect conical profile and summit elevation of about 2,339 m make it the highest volcano in the Kuril chain.
The island and volcano are largely uninhabited and are of interest for their geology and dramatic form; access is by boat or helicopter rather than by regular transport. The steep flanks and symmetrical cone present a striking natural landmark visible from surrounding sea approaches.
Alaid is an active volcano with a history of eruptions recorded in the 20th and 21st centuries, and its behaviour is monitored by Russian volcanological services. The island’s volcanic geology reflects the ongoing subduction processes in the Kuril arc.
Atlasov Island lies in the northern Kurils in the northwestern Pacific and is administered as part of Sakhalin Oblast; the volcano rises directly from the surrounding ocean.
- Elevation: Elevation is approximately 2,339 metres, making it the highest volcano in the Kuril Islands.
- Volcanic activity: Located on Atlasov Island, the volcano is notable for its symmetrical stratovolcano shape and is intermittently active with recorded eruptions in the modern period.
What to See #
- Summit cone: The summit forms a near-perfect conical profile and is the highest point in the Kuril island chain, with rocky flanks rising steeply from the sea.
Tips for Visiting Vulkan Alaid #
- Alaid is extremely remote (a Kuril/Sakhalin‑Oblast volcano): the only practical visits are by charter boat or helicopter in summer; July-August offers the calmest sea and weather window.
- Because this is a Russian border‑zone island, secure necessary permits and hire experienced local guides or operators who know regional logistics and regulations. There are no visitor facilities, so plan self‑sufficiently.
- Expect no marked tourist trails; most visitors view the volcano from sea level or a base camp - summit attempts are technical undertakings that require mountaineering experience and formal expedition planning.
Best Time to Visit Vulkan Alaid #
If planning a visit, aim for the short summer months (roughly June-August) when conditions are least severe.
