Vulcan's Throne
Volcano Cinder cone and scenic overlook on Grand Canyon
Cinder cone on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon within the Uinkaret volcanic field; visited for geology, rim viewpoints and short hikes above the Colorado River.
Vulcan’s Throne is a volcanic cinder cone located on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in northwestern Arizona. It forms part of the Uinkaret volcanic field and rises at the canyon rim above the Colorado River.
The cone was produced by relatively recent volcanic activity within the Uinkaret field; lava flows from vents in this field reached the canyon floor in multiple episodes. Those flows altered local river morphology where they reached the Colorado River.
The feature sits on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim near the Toroweap/Tuweep area in northwestern Arizona. The location is remote with limited nearby services; approach is normally via unpaved roads from the north or east.
- Geology: The site is a cinder cone on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and is part of the broader Uinkaret volcanic field.
- Access: Access is remote and typically via the unpaved Tuweep/Toroweap road; high-clearance vehicles and planning for limited services are strongly recommended.
What to See #
- Toroweap Overlook: A remote rim viewpoint adjacent to the cinder cone that looks down to Lava Falls and the Colorado River, commonly accessed from the Toroweap/Tuweep area.
How to Get to Vulcan's Throne #
Access from St. George/US‑89 area: take Arizona State Route 389 and County Road 109 (Tuweep Road) toward the Toroweap/Tuweep overlook on the North Rim-a rough, unpaved Forest Service road that typically requires high-clearance or 4x4 vehicles and can be impassable in wet conditions. The overlook is about a 2-3 hour drive from Fredonia/Williams Junction depending on conditions.
Tips for Visiting Vulcan's Throne #
