Vulcano

Vulcano is an Aeolian Island off the north coast of Sicily and is a volcanic island with fumarolic activity, volcanic sands and a prominent summit crater. It is part of the Italian region of Sicily and is one of the closely grouped Aeolian islands that lie north of Sicily.

Visitors hike to volcanic features such as the crater rim and thermal fumaroles, walk along black sand beaches and sample local mud baths in permitted areas. The island’s volcanic character is its main attraction, offering short climbs and coastal scenery rather than large built attractions.

The island has a history of sulphur extraction and small-scale habitation; its volcanic activity has influenced both landscape and local industry. Eruptive activity has occurred in historical times, with notable events in the 19th century, and fumarolic activity continues to be visible.
