Island Former Aral Sea island used for Soviet biological testing
Once an island in the Aral Sea, Vozrozhdeniya was used in the Soviet era for biological-weapons testing; after the sea receded it became a peninsula between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. It’s largely abandoned and not a conventional tourist site.

Vozrozhdeniya Island was an island in the Aral Sea that became notable during the Soviet era for military and biological-research activity. Following the shrinkage of the Aral Sea it is now connected to the mainland by exposed seabed and is largely a desiccated, isolated landform.
The site is remote and largely barren today; there are no visitor facilities and any approach is subject to national controls and safety considerations given its history. There are remains of infrastructure and fenced areas from the Soviet period, and the landscape is dominated by flat salty plains where the sea once lay.
Soviet-era biological weapons testing and storage took place on the island through the 20th century; personnel were withdrawn after the Soviet collapse and the island was abandoned and later examined in international cleanup efforts. A joint cleanup removed some known hazardous burial sites in the early 2000s.
Geographically the location lies in the former Aral Sea basin in Central Asia near the Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan border; ongoing regional water-level changes turned the former island into a peninsula and then into connected land as the sea receded.
