Mountains Mountain range in Siberia with rugged peaks
The Eastern Sayan are a Siberian mountain chain of remote peaks, river valleys and alpine passes; trekkers and climbers come for long-distance routes and wilderness camping.
Vostochny Sayan (Eastern Sayan) is the eastern segment of the Sayan mountain system in southern Siberia, forming rugged, forested highlands notable for steep ridges and remote alpine terrain.
The range is a transition zone between lower Siberian plains and higher interior mountains, with extensive taiga cover at lower elevations and rocky summits and plateaus above the tree line. It is used for mountaineering, scientific fieldwork and seasonal hunting and forestry activities.
Located broadly in southern Siberia, the range stretches across a large, sparsely populated area and is accessed from regional towns and long-distance routes used for forestry and mountain travel.
