Vodno
Mountains Mountain above Skopje featuring the Millennium Cross
A wooded peak above Skopje crowned by the Millennium Cross; visitors come for hiking trails, panoramic views over the city, and day trips to picnic spots and small mountain shelters.
Vodno is the forested mountain immediately above Skopje in North Macedonia, with a summit at about 1,066 metres and a prominent metal cross installed on the peak. It functions as the city’s main recreational upland and viewpoint.
Trails, picnic areas and a cable car provide access for walkers, cyclists and families; the summit area offers multiple lookout points and the large Millennium Cross which dominates the skyline. The mountain is used for short day hikes as well as longer ridge walks connecting to neighbouring peaks.
Development of trails and the construction of the Millennium Cross in 2002 increased the site’s profile as a visitor destination and local recreation area. Infrastructure has been added to support tourist access while much of the slopes remain wooded.
Vodno sits directly above the southern edge of Skopje and is considered part of the city’s immediate hinterland, making it easily reachable from central neighbourhoods.
- Elevation: The summit reaches about 1,066 metres above sea level, offering panoramic views over Skopje and the surrounding Šar and Jakupica ranges.
- Trails: A network of marked hiking and cycling trails crosses the mountain, with routes ranging from short walks to multi-hour ascents.
What to See #
- Cable car / lifts: Ski lift and cable car stations provide mechanical access from the city up to the wooded slopes and near the summit, shortening the 45-60 minute walking approach from lower trailheads.
- Millennium Cross: Millennium Cross stands on the summit as a prominent landmark and viewpoint, visible from much of Skopje.
How to Get to Vodno #
Vodno mountain rises immediately south of central Skopje and is commonly reached from the city by short taxi or local bus rides. A gondola/cable-car gives access partway up the mountain, and several marked hiking trails start from suburbs and parking areas on Vodno’s lower slopes; from downtown Skopje expect a short drive or bus ride to trailheads or the cable-car base.
Tips for Visiting Vodno #
- Take the cable car up Vodno for a rapid way to the Millennium Cross and panoramic views of Skopje; arriving early in the morning gives the clearest light and far fewer visitors than sunset and weekend evenings.
- If you prefer walking, choose one of the lesser-used trails on the western slopes to escape the crowds that gather around the cross and main viewpoint; those trails also open up different views toward Matka Canyon that many visitors miss.
- Avoid busy times (weekend late afternoons and public-holiday evenings) when locals picnic and the summit becomes crowded; check cable-car operating hours in advance as they are limited.
Best Time to Visit Vodno #
Go to Vodno in spring or early autumn for comfortable hiking temperatures and clear views over Skopje without the peak summer heat.
