Macedonia Square is the principal public plaza in the centre of Skopje, North Macedonia, functioning as the city’s main ceremonial and gathering space. It is a focal point for civic events and a concentration of national monuments and official buildings.

The square contains numerous statues and architectural façades added during a major city redevelopment project in the 2010s, creating a dense ensemble of monuments and museums around the open plaza. A large equestrian statue often called the ‘Warrior on a Horse’ is the most visually prominent feature.

The remodelling and monument programme in the 2010s reshaped the square’s appearance and added museums, memorials and new public spaces; these works are central to the square’s contemporary identity. The area continues to function as the city’s main public and ceremonial space.

Geographically Macedonia Square sits on the north bank of the Vardar River in central Skopje, adjacent to the historic Stone Bridge and within walking distance of government buildings and commercial streets.

• Skopje 2014 project: The square was substantially remodelled as part of the Skopje 2014 urban project and features many newly erected monuments and facades from that programme.
• Major monument: Dominated visually by a large equestrian monument commonly known as ‘Warrior on a Horse’ which stands prominently in the plaza and is a focal point for visitors.

Macedonia Square is in central Skopje on the riverfront and is obvious/walkable from the main pedestrian and historic center. It’s served by the city’s local bus network and is a short walk from the main central areas; from Skopje International Airport it is reached by car or taxi (the airport lies outside the city and the drive takes around 20-30 minutes).

• Go very early in the morning for unobstructed photos and to avoid the midday tour-bus crowds; the square is also atmospheric at night when the monuments and fountains are lit.
• Cross the Stone Bridge and walk into the Old Bazaar to escape the busiest vantage points and get alternate, less commercial views of the riverfront and city.
• If you want quieter viewpoints and different photo angles, walk down to the riverbank bridges rather than only shooting from the central plaza - many visitors don't leave the main pedestrian areas.
