Visby City Wall
Wall Medieval Gotland city wall encircling Visby, UNESCO site
Medieval defensive wall encircling Visby on Gotland, with preserved towers and gateways dating to the 1200s. Tourists walk the ramparts, explore Hanseatic streets and attend summer medieval events.
The Visby City Wall is a well-preserved medieval ring of fortifications that surrounds the old town of Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland. The wall and its associated towers and gates form a defining feature of Visby’s medieval layout.
Large stretches of the masonry survive and several original city gates remain in place, creating a continuous defensive circuit around the historic centre. Walkable sections and adjacent promenades let visitors experience elevated views across the town and the Baltic Sea.
The fortifications were constructed mainly during the 13th century when Visby was an important Baltic trading centre under Hanseatic influence; they were built to protect the prosperous port and merchant quarter. Over subsequent centuries the wall has been maintained and is today a principal element of Visby’s heritage and urban form.
The wall encircles Visby’s old town on the west coast of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, with the island served by ferry and air links to mainland Sweden. The medieval centre that the wall protects is adjacent to Visby harbour and the town’s modern amenities.
- Age and condition: The wall is a medieval fortification that largely dates from the 13th century and still encircles Visby's old town; several original gates remain visible.
- Wall access: Sections of the wall are walkable and provide elevated views over Visby and the Baltic Sea; entrances to walkable stretches are found near the major medieval gates.
What to See #
- Österport (Eastern Gate): Österport, one of the principal medieval city gates, forming part of the original ring of fortifications and providing a surviving access point through the wall.
- Söderport (Southern Gate): Söderport, a surviving southern gateway in the wall that historically controlled access to the town from the mainland and is adjacent to parkland and promenades.
- Visby ring wall: The ring wall itself, a continuous medieval fortification encircling Visby's old town for several kilometres and punctuated by surviving towers and sections of battlement.
