Virupaksha Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in the Hampi ruins of Karnataka, India; parts of the site date back to at least the 7th century. It is a focal monument within the Hampi UNESCO World Heritage area and remains in continuous religious use.
The complex contains pillared halls, subsidiary shrines, and a multi-tiered gopuram marking the main entrance; the temple precinct opens onto the long bazaar street that led to the city. The sanctum contains an active lingam and the site is used for daily worship and regular festivals, including an annual chariot procession.
The temple originated in the early medieval period and was extensively expanded and remodelled during the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th century onwards, becoming the focal temple of the city of Vijayanagara. Over time the complex accumulated additional halls, gateways, and decorative sculpture associated with royal patronage.
The temple stands on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River within the Hampi archaeological zone in Karnataka, near the village cluster of Hampi and the modern town of Hospet (Hosapete). The surrounding landscape is a dry, rocky plain scattered with boulder-strewn hills and ruins.

How to Get to Virupaksha Temple #
Virupaksha Temple is in Hampi’s core ruins area, on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River. From Hampi Bazaar it is a 5-10 minute walk; most visitors stay in Hospet (Hampi Road) and take a 13-14 km taxi or bus to Hampi. Hospet is on the Hospet-Hubli rail line; Hospet Junction railway station is approx. 13 km from Hampi. The nearest airport is Hubli (about 160 km) or Bengaluru (about 350 km).
Tips for Visiting Virupaksha Temple #
- Arrive before 8:00am to hear the morning puja and avoid the midday crowds; the shadow-play of the gopura is best in low light.
- Combine a visit with an uphill walk to Hemakuta Hill (10-15 minutes from the temple) for a view of the temple complex and sunrise over the boulder-strewn plain.
- Respect temple protocol: dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and leave photography-alone during active priestly rituals at the sanctum.
- Buy a guide or an on-site ASI board explanation for the pillared hall (maha-mandapa) - many carvings are hard to decipher without context and are worth ten minutes of attention.
