Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park is a large protected area in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo that conserves a range of habitats from lowland tropical forest to alpine slopes and active volcanoes. Established in 1925, it is one of Africa’s oldest national parks and is internationally important for biodiversity and endangered species.

Notable features within the park include the active volcano Mount Nyiragongo, with a summit near 3,470 metres, and montane forest sectors that are home to populations of mountain gorillas. The park’s ecological diversity supports large mammals, primates, and many endemic and threatened species across its varied elevation range.

• Lowland and wetland zones: Extensive lowland tropical forest, savanna and wetlands provide habitat for diverse mammal and bird species across the park's varied elevations and slopes.
