Vindobona
Archaeological Site Roman-era settlement that became Vienna
The Roman military camp Vindobona lies beneath modern Vienna; visitors explore the imperial city around the Ringstraße, the Hofburg, museums and Vienna’s classical music and coffeehouse traditions.
Vindobona was a Roman military camp and settlement located at the site of present-day Vienna on the Danube. It functioned as a fortified base on the Roman Danubian frontier and as a local trading and logistics centre.
Archaeological and documentary evidence show a fortified camp and associated civilian settlement occupied from the early imperial period; the site hosted garrison units that monitored and controlled movements along this stretch of the Danube. Over centuries the Roman installation was succeeded by medieval and then modern urban development that became Vienna.
The Roman presence established Vindobona’s strategic importance on the north bank of the Danube and laid foundations for continuous habitation that developed into the Austrian capital.
The ancient camp lay within what is now central Vienna, with modern districts and archaeological sites in the Innere Stadt and adjacent riverfront areas marking the location of the former Roman works.

- Roman establishment: Established as a military and trading post along the Danube frontier during the 1st century AD and occupied by Roman units through the imperial period.
