Villingili (often called Villimalé) is an inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll immediately adjacent to the capital, Malé, and part of the greater Malé urban area. It functions primarily as a residential and local-services island that relieves population pressure on Malé.

The island has a compact shoreline with public beaches and local shops, short coastal paths and neighbourhood streets rather than large tourist facilities. Its proximity to the capital makes it useful for short trips from Malé and for local commuting.

Historically it has been one of the islands incorporated into the urban development around Malé as the city expanded; governance and services are administered within Kaafu Atoll’s local island framework. The island has been continuously inhabited in the modern era and used for residential purposes.

Geographically Villingili sits about 2 kilometres southwest of central Malé in Kaafu Atoll, reachable by a short ferry from the capital and visible from Malé’s shoreline.

  • Getting there: Regular public ferries link the island to Malé; the crossing takes around 10 minutes depending on service and tides.
  • Best views: The west-facing shoreline provides unobstructed views of the Malé skyline at sunset, a popular local vantage point.
