Main image

Villarrica is an active stratovolcano in Chile’s Araucanía region and one of the country’s most active volcanic centers. It towers above the towns of Pucón and Villarrica and is a prominent landmark on the southern shore of Lake Villarrica.

The volcano is a popular destination for guided climbs to the summit crater in summer and for winter sports on its slopes; local operators run ascents that require crampons and technical guidance. The summit area periodically shows lava lake activity and persistent fumaroles, making it a focus for volcanological monitoring.

Villarrica has produced frequent eruptions in the modern era and prompted evacuations in notable episodes, most recently during increased activity in 2015. The mountain forms part of the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes and is closely monitored by Chilean authorities.

The volcano sits in south-central Chile near the towns of Villarrica and Pucón, forming a dominant cone on the landscape and rising directly from the lakeshore environment of Lake Villarrica.

  • Elevation: Elevation is approximately 2,847 metres above sea level, making it one of the higher and more accessible active volcanoes in Chile.
  • Activity: Known for frequent activity, including an eruption sequence in 2015 that led to evacuations of nearby communities.

What to See #

  • Summit crater: The summit crater, which periodically hosts lava lakes and fumarolic activity, is the main focus of scientific observation and guided climbs.
  • Ski area: A developed ski area on the volcano's slopes that operates in the southern hemisphere winter and provides access for winter sports and summer hiking.

How to Get to Villarrica (volcano) #

Villarrica volcano lies between the towns of Villarrica and Pucón in Chile’s Araucanía region. Most visitors base themselves in Pucón, where guided ascents, ski-area access and tour operators depart; from Pucón it’s a short drive to the trailheads, ski lifts or meeting points used by operators.

Road access to the volcano area is by local roads from Pucón and Villarrica; if you plan an ascent hire a licensed mountain guide in Pucón or Villarrica and follow the operator’s pickup instructions.

Tips for Visiting Villarrica (volcano) #

  • If you plan a summit climb of Villarrica, book a licensed mountain guide from Pucón who provides helmets, crampons and up-to-date volcanic/weather briefings-independent summit attempts are hazardous on an active volcano.
  • Start very early (pre-dawn) with your guided operator to take advantage of the most stable morning weather and to increase your chance of clear summit views before afternoon cloud build-up.
  • If you prefer not to climb, enjoy the volcano from safer, lower-elevation viewpoints around Pucón and choose guided activities (snowshoeing in winter, lava-viewing hikes in summer) rather than attempting exposed sections on your own.

For access and safer conditions, plan visits during the austral summer (December-February); outside that window expect colder, more hazardous conditions.

Austral summer (best for visits/climbs)
December-February · 10-20°C (lower elevations)
Milder weather at the base and the most common window for guided climbs and outdoor activity; conditions on the volcanic summit can still be harsh.
Shoulder seasons
March-May, September-November · 5-15°C (lower elevations)
Cooler and increasingly changeable-some hiking and viewing possible but weather can close routes at short notice.
Austral winter
June-August · 0-5°C (lower elevations)
Colder with frequent snow and ice-many routes and guided activities are limited or require technical gear.
