The area was designated for protection as part of Chile’s national park system to conserve volcanic landscapes and native forests; management has focused on balancing recreation with protection of natural ecosystems.

Located in the Andes of southern Chile near the town of Pucón in Araucanía, the park occupies volcanic terrain on the western edge of the Andean range.

  • Active volcano: The park centres on an active stratovolcano that rises to roughly 2,800 metres, so visitors should check volcanic and weather conditions before planning ascents.

How to Get to Villarrica National Park #

Villarrica National Park is normally accessed from the resort town of Pucón, which is the usual gateway for visitors. From Pucón it’s a road journey of roughly 30-45 minutes by car, shuttle or organized tour to the park access points around the volcano; many tour operators and hotels in Pucón run daily transfers. If you are coming from the regional centre of Temuco, Pucón is the nearest town for onward connections.

Tips for Visiting Villarrica National Park #

  • If you intend to climb Volcán Villarrica, always hire an authorized mountain guide and book in advance through Pucón operators-Chilean authorities require licensed guides for summit attempts and the crater can be closed for volcanic activity.
  • Start very early (pre-8am) for the best chance of clear views and calmer winds; afternoon weather in the southern Andes often brings cloud and stronger winds that limit visibility and make summit efforts unsafe.
  • Avoid visiting in the peak Chilean summer (January-February) if you want fewer crowds; if you must go then, reserve guides, transport and any park permits well ahead through CONAF or local agencies.
