Villa San Marco

Villa San Marco is a large Roman villa complex at Stabiae near Castellammare di Stabia, notable for extensive structural remains, mosaics and fresco fragments. The villa belonged to the class of elite coastal residences around the Bay of Naples and shows architectural features typical of first-century Roman luxury villas.

Visitors encounter exposed courtyards, mosaic pavements, and rooms that reveal the villa’s original plan and decoration, together with terraces that faced the sea. The site is presented as an open archaeological area where structural remains and decorative elements are visible.

The villa was uncovered during Bourbon-era excavations in the 18th century and has been studied by archaeologists since; it was one of several villas at Stabiae affected by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius. Conservation and excavation efforts have continued intermittently to document and stabilise the remains.

Villa San Marco sits within the archaeological district of Stabiae in the Campania region, near Castellammare di Stabia and the archaeological sites around Pompeii and Herculaneum on the Gulf of Naples.
