Villa La Petraia

Villa La Petraia is a Renaissance villa north of Florence that became part of the Medici family’s network of country residences. It is noted for its terraced gardens and elevated views over the surrounding countryside.

Visitors typically explore formal terraced gardens, stone balustrades and planted parterres that descend from the villa to the valley below, plus interior state rooms with period decoration. The villa’s position offers panoramic viewpoints over Florence and the Arno valley.

Originally a fortified farmhouse, the complex was transformed and enlarged during the Renaissance after acquisition by Florentine elites and later incorporated into the Medici estate. Subsequent owners made 18th and 19th century alterations before the villa entered public care.
